Varny was a member of the mercenary company Idra's Sunhawks. She met her shieldmate there, another Sunhawk named Sania.
After Varny lost her left eye to an unlucky sword stroke, she and Sania mustered out together. They settled in Hawksnest and began the family they'd always wanted. They both managed to get pregnant at the same time, and so had two girls the same age. To their mothers' disappointment, neither girl was interested in becoming a swordswoman. Varny's child was set on becoming a scrivener, and Sania's, who was already beginning to show signs of the Healing Gift, wanted to be a Healer.
