The Kiyamvir Ma'ar, the Mage of Dark Flames, was a powerful adept mage of ancient times who fought against Urtho, the Mage of Silence, in the Mage Wars.

Ma'ar was a creator who designed many beasts from scratch, albeit focusing more on strength than grace in those creatures.

He climbed to power in Predain in the years immediately preceding his conflict with Urtho. He served as Prime Minister while Amberdrake was studying at the Predain College of Chirurgeons. Upon the King's death, he crowned himself ruler. Having united warring tribes, he called them the Master Race, and was known for his statements about inferior races during his tenure as Prime Minister. As King, he began official persecution of "undesirables," first enacting restrictions, then deportations, and later having them taken away never to be seen again. He eliminated any opposition to war with neighboring lands.

Ma'ar successfully conquered many nations before reaching the border of Tantara. His spies planted a dyrstaf in the Royal Palace of Tantara, which launched a fear spell that caused King Leodhan and most nobles to flee. Very late in the war against Urtho, Ma'ar made the Royal Palace his headquarters. At the end, while Urtho watched Skandranon deliver the ultimate weapon to Ma'ar's Throne Room, Ma'ar shocked them by killing himself, saying he would live on.

At the end of the Mage Wars he was described thusly:

"He had not been born a handsome man, but over the years he had sculpted his body into the image of a young god. His square-jawed face, with precisely chiseled cheekbones and sensuous mouth, framed with a mane of hair of dark copper, topped a body that would be the envy of any warrior in his ranks. All that remained of the old Ma'ar were the eyes; small, shrewd, and of an odd yellow-green."[1]

He continued the practice of body sculpting in his subsequent incarnations, becoming more outlandish with each new body.

Reincarnation[]

Ma'ar found a way to build a spiritual Sanctuary to hide his spirit in the nether planes in the event his body was destroyed. This allowed him to later possess the body of one of his descendants, providing they had a desirable amount of power; at bare minimum, the Mage-Gift. The selection of a lineal descendant was keyed to them casting a Fire spell, which would trigger the possession by Ma'ar. He did this many times, living under many names, such as Krawlven, Renthorn, Geslaken,[2] Leareth, Sar'terixa the Mad,[3] Zendak,[4] etc. Not long after the Mage Wars, a Tayledras Vale near Iftel encountered and defeated a Dark Mage that was likely one of his early incarnations.[5] In each of these bodies, Ma'ar was careful to spread his seed far enough that he would not run out of future descendants. His final incarnation was as Mornelithe Falconsbane.

Final death[]

Ma'ar was destroyed completely during the reign of Queen Selenay, when Firesong chased Falconsbane out of the body of An'desha. Following Falconsbane into his nether realm Sanctuary, Firesong rent Ma'ar's spirit limb from limb, destroying him for all time.
