Lastern was the last of the 'False Sons,' the corrupt Sons of the Sun who ruled Karse until Vkandis personally intervened to end their reign.
Lastern was a mage with minimal ability, just enough to counterfeit the required miracles. On Midwinter Day at the Fire Kindling Ceremony in the central temple at Sunhame, he stood behind the altar, waiting to kindle the sacred flames by magic if the concentrated beam of sunlight didn't work. Just before the sunlight hit the kindling on the altar, a lightning bolt flashed out of the clear, cloudless sky and hit Lastern. There was nothing left of the Sunpriest beyond his boots and smoking clothing.
Karal described him as being "like a fat, black spider,"[1] and an "oily professional politician." [2]
