Istren is a Shin'a'in horse trainer, a member of Clan Tale'sedrin and one of Kerowyn's blood cousins. Kethry was his grandmother on his mother's side, while his father was Shin'a'in, originally from another clan before marrying into Tale'sedrin. He inherited his father's dusky-gold complexion and black hair, and his mother's green eyes.
