In ancient times, long before the Mage Wars, lived the mage-lord Heshain. One year while the Sister Lashan was away at the annual Autumn Harvest Fair, he attacked her home enclave of the Sisterhood of Spell and Sword. Under strict orders, his men killed every adult, and every young girl that was not mage-gifted. The girls with the Mage-Gift were rounded up, herded into wagons and taken away. Only the apprentice Vena escaped, as she was out in the forest when the attack occurred.
Knowing that the two of them in their current state could not rescue the girls from Heshain, the elderly mage-smith Lashan spelled herself into a special sword she had made, and became Need. She and Vena then set off to rescue the others.
