Grumio was a Rethwellan silk merchant. Given his sword calluses and wide-ranging knowledge, he was probably a mercenary or caravan guard at one time.
On behalf of the merchants in the area, he hired Tarma and Kethry to destroy Lastel Longknife and his bandit gang, who had been preying on the merchant caravans. The mission was particularly important to Grumio as his niece and heir, Lena, had been captured, tortured and killed when the bandits attacked the caravan she was traveling in.
The story is inaccurately told by Leslac in the song "Threes."
Grumio also allowed some of the Sunhawks to use his merchant house colors as disguises when covertly entering Petras to revenge Idra's death.[1]
