Corbie was the lord of Felwether, a manor-keep with walled village. He married the young Lady Myria, who did not welcome the marriage. He cared little for her, not even sending for a Healer after the birth of their son, Syrtin.
Corbie was murdered by his seneschal, who was his bastard half-brother. The seneschal had been embezzling money for some time, and by killing Corbie and framing Myria for the murder, he could cover his tracks and become regent for his infant nephew. From that point it would have been easy to arrange an "accident" and inherit everything himself.
Unfortunately for him, Tarma and Kethry arrived in time and solved the locked-door mystery, proving his guilt.
